What Is an IP Address? An IP address is a small digit that uniquely identifies an Internet-connected device. Each device connected to the internet must have an IP address.  These numbers are assigned by organizations, but they don't always make sense. IP addresses are made up of four parts, each separated by periods (dots). The first three numbers identify the area of the world where a device is located. The last number identifies the specific device within that area.  For example, if you're in Seattle and your IP address is 123.456.789 , it means that you're somewhere in North America (123) on a server with 456 other devices.  You can check your IP address by visiting a website like What is my IP or by using a mobile app. You can also find it in your phone settings or on your computer.
