What Is an IP Address? An IP address is a small digit that uniquely identifies an Internet-connected device. Each device connected to the internet must have an IP address.  These numbers are assigned by organizations, but they don't always make sense. IP addresses are made up of four parts, each separated by periods (dots). The first three numbers identify the area of the world where a device is located.
